The Nigerian University Games Association says it risks missing out on the 2023 FISU World University Games, scheduled to hold from July 28 to August 8 in Chengdu, China due to lack of funding, The PUNCH reports.
With exactly a month to the start of the Games, the dreams of 75 athletes selected for the Games are at risk. The athletes were selected at a trial which was held in Benin City in May.
In a statement by the acting General Secretary of NUGA, Chidiebere Ezeani, which was obtained by our correspondent, the body expressed the urgent need for assistance from the government and corporate organisations.
“We appeal to the government to come to our aid and support our athletes to the World University Games; we call upon the government, sports authorities, and corporate sponsors to recognize the immense value of investing in university athletes. They are the future of Nigerian sports, and their success will inspire generations to come,” Ezeani said.
“NUGA implores the government, sports authorities, and corporate sponsors to step forward and provide the necessary financial support to ensure Nigeria’s participation at the World University Games. With timely assistance, we can empower our talented athletes to represent our great nation with pride, resilience, and determination.”
