KAA Gent manager, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, has explained why his team opted against signing Nigerian forward Victor Boniface last season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Boniface has been impressive for Union Saint-Gilliose this season since he arrived from Bodo/Glimt scoring a total of 22 goals in all 53 appearances across all competitions.
Vanhaezebrouck revealed that Boniface’s injury history at his previous club discouraged the Buffalos from signing the in-form Nigerian forward.
Shortly, after Boniface joined the Norwegian club from Lagos-based outfit Real Sapphire Football Club in 2019, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury twice during his spell in Norway.
“Boniface was also on our list, but there were doubts within the club after two serious knee injuries. What he showed this year is even better than what he showed in Norway,” Vanhaezebrouck told Voetbalnieuws.
Meanwhile, Boniface is a subject of a transfer this summer as top European clubs have been monitoring his progress in Belgium.
The 20-year-old came second in the Ebony Shoe award race behind winner Mike Ndayishimiye and is expected to be included in the Super Eagles squad to face Sierra Leone in June in a matchday five of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
