Fifteen teams will take part in the first edition of the Edo State Secondary Schools Football Championship, which holds from October 15 to 29.
The tournament, the brainchild of Edo Peoples Forum 2020, a diaspora group, will have 12 male teams and three female teams jostling for honours.
The male schools are Ayoguiri Grammer School, St Paul’s Anglican Grammer School, Egori Community Secondary School, Ogbona Secondary School, St John’s Boys Model Secondary School and Our Lady of Fatima College, all from Edo North.
Representatives for Edo South are Edo Boys High School, Edo College, Eghosa Anglican Grammar School and Western Boys High School, while Annunciation Catholic College and Ujoelen Grammer School from Edo Central complete the list in the boys category.
The female team that will vie for honours are Anglican Girls Grammar school, Idia College and St Maria Goretti.
The convener of the group, Col Charles Asemota (who retired in the US Army), said the championship was a way to empower young people and put them on the right track.
He stated that the winning team would go home with N1m, second-place team get N500, 000, while the third-place winners receive N300, 000.
All 15 teams will also get trophies and medals for their efforts.
